A Residence in NW DC

Unique Challenges Bring Creative Solutions

A small yard in NW DC presented a number of challenges with access being key.  The builder had already installed the pool, driveway and a small patio.  Access was difficult because of the existing pool and tight property lines; the rear neighbor discovered that their fence was in the wrong location so it was moved and created an awkward space along the rear. Plus, how to make the yard more inviting as well as kid and dog friendly? We started by removing an old concrete wall along the back and the tall bamboo all by hand. New stone seat walls were built to separate the backyard from the parking area along the side.  Flagstone was added to create more space for entertaining and lots of plants were added to soften and add color. Pipes for the pool equipment took up a significant portion of the yard near the patio so we did not pour concrete but rather opted for flagstone on a stone dust base.
